Hi,
Newbie here... I am considering doing up my EF falcon, currently it is a 4.0 6cyl and I would like to drop a xr8 into it... I have been offered an engine at good price so I am considering.. I need to know what I need to consider before going ahead with this, mechanical such as gearbox and other components and also legal such as if I will need to get engineering certificats and that. Ohh I live in the state of NSW, i'm sure it differs from state to state of Oz.... Thanks Darrin |

G'day mate. Your another local!!
To be honest it's a relatively big job. If your dead-set on a 5ltr your best of selling the 6cyl and buying a 8cyl. If your after outright speed I would just do a manual conversion on yours and work the 4 litre abit. 150-160rwkw N/A isn't too hard to achieve.

Thanks Daz As TerroristGHIA mentioned, take a look at this link. ford-4l-and-6-cylinder-f1/3-9l-4-0l-inline-6-modification-guide-t66.html Your biggest let down at the moment is the Auto and the 3.08 diff ratio. Swap them out for a Manual and a XR6 3.45 LSD diff along with the exhaust work done and you should be looking at very low 15 sec quarter mile. Expect to pay $600-700 for all the parts for a manual conversion and $250 - 300 for the diff.

cool another ford person from our area. As sd1800 said, if you want an 8, just start fresh with a factory V8, converting isn't worth it for what they are
check the thread given. do the smaller things (diff, auto to manual) then eventually turbo it, seems worth it!

Great guys, thanks for all the feed back.. I am considering going 2 ways, either keeping the 6cyl or I will just purchase an old crapy 8cyl and start a project...
I was in Dubai for a while and had a mustang cobra, just awesome, I have been a holden person but once I got that mustang don't think i'll go back to holden... Miss that mustang LOL |

G'day darren68.
I have just abandoned a such a project - ED 4.0L auto to 351W stroker (391) manual conversion. A new job overseas put the brakes on this. I got as far as dropping the 391 in. Yes it's a fair whack of work. If you're mad set on this 4.0L car you have, like I was, then it's worth it if the body is mint for instance, otherwise buy an XR8. If the former is you, you will require: A donor 5.0L EB/II/ED Falcon manual. From this you will take 5.0L obviously, 5.0L k-member, EEC-IV ECU, eng ctrl/all under hood harnesses, 5spd/harness & cross-member, 5spd console dress, 78-series LSD, manual pedal box, pedals and clutch accessories. Everything will plug and play into the 4.0L car. What year is your 4.0L? If it's post mid 1993 then the A/C will be R134A otherwise R12. Get a donor car compatible to the refrigerant you're already running. If you're running R12 now may need to convert to R134A anyway. Check with your local fridgy. Later model manual EB and ED XR8's also came out with syncro on reverse gear as well. If you're after reading material for this I have a genuine EA-ED factory manual and a great 'how to' on playing with EEC-IV. Let me know if you're interested as I'm looking to off-load this material. I wouldn't advise attempting such a transplant without a factory manual. Cheers. |

Sorry darren68 - you're EF - get an EF 5.0L donor which will be easiest to plug and play if you want to go down that road.
