Hey Guys,

I have recently purchased a 97 EL Fairmont, 5 litre. When driving around town or cruising on the freeway it is great, but as soon as you put your foot down to overtake or go up hills it starts to cough and splutter a bit. I have got new leads and spark plugs for it. I have been told it could be the air flow meter. What do you guys think, any I deas??

Thanks

Gaz

Check / replace the dist cap and rotor, plugs and leads, air and fuel filters, check and adjust the timing, and see how you go from there. It may need a TFI module, new O2 sensors, injectors, fuel reg, fuel pump, MAF, etc.....
Start with the easier stuff, and try the car after each step. It may be something very basic like a cracked dist cap, or a worn carbon button, etc.
Good luck.

fuel filter filter would be a good starting point and check fuel pressure after that. if that dont help start working ya way through the list like sooty72 said.

while your in the engine bay might aswell check-adjust TPS voltage, refer to the sticky at the top of the page.

Also, see if it is spitting out any fault codes, very good for troubleshooting stuff.

I'd be looking at fuel problems first, fuel filter, pressure, maybe fuel pump on way out? I assume your air filter is ok?

Yeah my Xr6 was doing this not too long ago, fixed it by replacing the fuel filter.. turns out it was about 90% blocked. Then ran some Lucas Oils fuel additive thru the mixture now she goes like a dream!!!
