G'day crew, Im a newbie on here I currently own a 98 El XR8 that I am hoping to modify, but not to radically
It currently runs the standard 185kw 5ltr and manual trans. I have been given the opportunity to purchase a low km Au 220kw motor that also was a manual. By now I think you see where Im going with this. Both cars have the stock ecu's and the Au motor has all wiring right back to the tail lights. Unfortunatley the Au gearbox is gone but the bell housing and clutch etc are still there. 1)I have been reliably informed that the physical transplant will not cause to many headaches but I have reservations as Im not full bottle on wether there was different sump set ups etc. Anyone who can help with advice I would really appreciate it. I intend to go through with the mechanical side of it with the help of mechanic friends but any problems identified now would be great. 2)Once the motors in I think the drama will come with fitting smart shield technology into smart lock? I hope again Ive been reliably informed that an aftermarket computer on the Au should solve 90% of the drama's, but again anyonw who knows different please speak up 3) Will the El manual bolt straight up and will it survive the jump in kilowatts?? thanks in advance, Andy! |

SH*T...I just found the AU motor into the DL Fairlane thread Seems the actual transplant is relatively straight forward? As for the wiring....can anyone offer advice as to how to wire in the smartshield to the smart lock if need be. I cant see that the standard EL ecu will unleash the ful fury of the 220kw??

Hi there Andy,
Welcome to FordMods, With your engine swap why don't you use the Au block and heads and use your EL harness? but you'll have to swap your dizzy aswell from the EL, thats what i would do (but i could be wrong lol!). Did the EL 185kw motor have the bigger MAF and T/Body?, if not change that with the EL electronics,thats if you got all of that gear aswell!!. How many k's are on the AU engine?, and what would you be doing with the EL engine? got a mate that could be interested!!.. Hope it goes well bloke, and you figure everythin out!!, Cheers, Jason. |

I guess if I was a full bottle I could make some decisions on using some of the old EL gear but I kinda figured that putting the dizzy into the Au motor would be like taking a step backwards. The engineering on the AU 220 compared to the 185kw is a pretty big step up so I want to try and use all thats available. I figure the wiring like I said is gonna be a headache and may end up costing me $1500 plus with aftermarket computer and a good auto sparky? But if a jobs worth doing......
Forgot to mention, Au motor was 90,000 clicks when it lost a fight with a lamp post. EL windsor has 185,000 and Im still staggered at how well it pulls I guess a set of bearings and seal's wouldnt go astray on the Au motor mind you....oh and a couple of performance mods if theres any suggestions hahaha |

Yeah good point bloke, didn't think of that LOL!.
Did you you get the MAF and T/body from the AU?, that would be a gr8 mod aswell. thats if the EL had smaller gear. Good luck with it mate Cheers, Jason. |

Just use the Dizzy then get the factory ECU tuned.
Coil pack wont make a difference on it making it 220kw

Okay, so Is transferring the dizzy from the EL windsor gonna be a straight forward swap into the AU? If it is a viable option then will that make adapting the ecu from the Au into the EL system any easier....so many questions

do the au cams still have a dizzy gear on them?
be nice if you could get most of the 220, would the EL ECU need a retune? |

if you were to put the au 220 into the EL XR would it run ok with the EL tune?
