i have a el 5.0l and cant figure out why it pings in hot weather. i use bp ultimate, i have cleaned the air flow meter, new dizzy cap, button leads, plugs etc. it sounds like theres too much air and not enough fuel. if i advance or retard the timming would that help?

Mine does the same, check the timing and make sure its not too advanced.
30 deg btdc is standard |

I would set it at 10degrees and then advance or retard it whilst test driving it.30degrees is way too much advance.

You must put the engine in diagnostic mode, then adjust the base timing to the said spec. This is as per Ford Service manual for the EF/EL, Vol. 1, page 9-1-11. You need to remember this is the timing with no EEC input, however in normal mode the EEC delays the spark to whatever it needs (quite possibly 10*BTDC at low RPM/MAP). Pinging is common on all these engines, although mine only with standard unleaded. BP ultimate is OK for mine. Before you bother checking the timing, pull the spark plugs and make sure they are not covered in a hard black carbon deposit. If they are they can act as a glow plug and cause early ignition. Beyond that, check you timing is 30*BTDC. If it still pings try 28*BTDC. That still meets the spec. Oh, one thing that caused weird running and pinging on mine. In the plastic intake tube between the MAF and the TB you have that dog turd expansion chamber for silencing the intake. Mine had come a bit loose and was sucking air post MAF. Check that as it's a pretty poor fitting.

Run some water through engine..
Water injection.. To clean combustion chambers.. Check that your EGR is working and connected.. Retard ignition till you work the problem out !!! Check fuel delivery...
