Get the diff hot, then change the oil. Make sure you put LSD oil in it.

LSD's are not designed to Lock up. They limit slip on one wheel, by allowing the other to spin aswell. What you have is a classic case of a dying LSD.

you'll have alot of ppl telling you it's dead but i thought that when i bought a second hand ED XR diff from the wreckers. but i fixed it.

all i did was drain the diff oil and then just put some LS90 in it for about 2 weeks of normal driving, then changed it again and put Castrol XFA something something (can't remember the rest) proper Ford factory V8 LSD oil in it when i did axle seals and wheel bearing. works a treat. beware it is $35 a litre!

You don't need to use the Castrol SF-XA......Castrol LSX90 will do just fine.

Then it needs a rebuild.....there's a mob called "Street & Strip Gears" that sell new 28 spline, 4 pinion LSD centre for about $600, including freight.
I have one in my ED right now.....I changed to a higher grade of fasteners to hold the centre together though.

I changed the oil in a mates AU XR8, to that Castrol SF-XA, and the diff started making noises 3 weeks later.....and he doesn't drive hard...he's a grandma at driving.
I rebuilt the diff, and used LSX90 in it, and had no more probs with it after that.
The SF-XA seems thinner straight out of the bottle than LSX90, I noticed.
I use Penrite Limslip 140.

as 67rce said its a lsd (limited slip) not a lock diff, so there will be the odd occasions where it may not spin both wheels..
the thing is some oils are better than others, i use penrite 10 tenths hd gear oil and it works a treat..
but even with castrol lsx the lsd should work as its meant to..
so if the diff is showing signs of loose/lazy lsd? its tired and ready for a reco..

Ford recommend 90 weight for the 3.23 and 85/140 for the 3.45.
Unless you do burnouts you wont need 85/140, too heavy for everyday driving and will increase fuel consumption slightly.
I use lsx90 in my 3.45 lsd and it is fine, of course the diff was already in good nick.
