Had similar symptons in my el under load going up hill whatever at around the same rpm, and a change of leads and plugs had it sorted (could of been either). Had another miss whilst on light throttle, and was a leaking inlet manifold gasket. but I'm told these are fairly common so these would of been done already. done it.... also close to giving up

my el does the same thing but from 1600-2000, (under light acceluration),under load or not.but when u ya hold it flat it just takes off, found an earth wire on under the intake manifold was loose.cleaned it done it up and cleaned the rotor cap and its been fine for about 5-6 moths starting to do it again, does the same problem when the fuel gets low, so goin to replace the fuel pump and see how that goes..
