Hey guys i was looking at getting one of the EB Steering wheels that comes in a Fairmont, or Lane with the 4 Buttons for cruise control. I have a GLI and so the car doesn't have cruise control, now i was thinking that i could make the wheel of use if i could possibly re wire the buttons so that they control the "track up/down" and "volume up/down" of my stereo !
Is this possible? The reason i ask is because i dont know what the other side of the buttons or wiring looks like !

The main issue you are going to have is that all the signals from the four cruise buttons on the steering wheel, all travel through 1 (one) wire, and each button has a specific resistor value which is interpreted by the cruise control module.
I believe the volume and seek controls on the front of a stereo have individual tracks for each button push which would require four input wires from the steering wheel, which is not possible. On an EB there are only 3 tracks on the wheel boss to transfer signals from the column to the wheel. One is 12v+, the second Earth, and the third is for those vehicles fitted with cruise control. Why, oh Why, do you want to use that awful looking Bus Wheel?
Go out and buy a boss kit and a nice aftermarket wheel of your choice. Much better wheel in the long run. BenJ

By peaandham, shot with FinePix A600 at 2009-12-08 I was thinking of a $110 Leather SAAS one from Autobarn but i am open for suggestions if you have any BenJ

I have to agree re the smaller diametre wheels. My current wheel blocks the top of the guages, and I have to duck a bit to see how fast I am going from around 60kph up LOL.
However, it feels so much better in your hands, that I just can't go back to a standard one. The optional MOMO wheel from the XRs is a nice wheel, but very expensive. There are some nice MOMO wheels on Ebay in a larger diametre, around 350mm but they are a bit more pricey. Cheers BenJ

Just to re-cap what BenJ said, the only way you'd get volume control is to go with like a factory AU head unit as they had volume controls on the wheels and modify to what ever resistor network they use... or if its digital then you'd need a analogue to digital converter to get it to work...
No aftermarket head unit has this feature unless you buy the remote control that some brands make... i think in regards to the three wires, one is def earth but the yellow is not direct 12 volt is it? it comes through the relay coil for the horn coz when you earth the yellow wire the horn goes off? i think... and blue wire senses four diff voltages for cruise settings... (on, off, resume, set)... basically yes buy a nice wheel with no cruise buttons... i love my momo wheel regardless of how much it cost me however its a shame its not a tad smaller, does feel like it could be a truck wheel some days...
