Hi All,
I am currently looking at a diff on ebay thats missing the centre. I dont know a great deal about diffs and the ins and out of how they work so my question is if i purchase the diff will i be able to install the diff centre myself or is there too mucg involved? Also am i right in saying its not the centre that determines the ratio? Cheers Dan |

it's a fairly involved job. remove wheels, brakes, axles, diff cover etc
the crown wheel and pinion gear determine the ratio you need a diff spreader to re-install the centre

You also need specialist gear and knowledge on how to set the required backlash between the pinion and crown wheel etc.
I have attempted just about everything you can think of in modding a car in my driveway, but the one thing I paid a professional to do was rebuild my diff. I have heard quite a few stories of people doing work on their diffs, getting it bolted together, only to have a whiny/noisy diff one month later. It will cost upwards of $700 to have a diff assembled with new bearings etc, but you should get some quotes. Cheers BenJ

The crownwheel and it's pinion should be kept together, IIRC they are machined and marked that way.
