Oil can leak up the key-way from the crank too.

Usually you will get slight engine Vibration as the Rubber might have perished or is slipping. If you look down at the balancer when the engine is running you might be able to see the outer part of the thing move slightly in and out. Anyone who has ever owned a holden red 6 will know :D

Really, the BEST way is to remove it which you will have to do to replace the seal. Many times these balancers will have a score mark on the outer shaft of the balancer and will need either replacing or re-sleeving to fix anyway. I think you can still buy them reco'd?

check your timing belt tensioner also
if you have any fresh oil residue ontop of the waterpump shaft after a long drive it might be from there
mine had a very slow leak that would eventualyl find its way to the belts and threw oil all over the shop.
at least it got rid of the squeeky pully though lol

grab a timing light, earth ur connector on ur rh shock tower and check ur timing. If ur car is running well to begin with then ur balancer timing marks won't even be close (saying that ur balancer has shifted internally). Otherwise it might b rattling at idle. about $100 approx for a new balancer but u will need a puller to take it off
