Gday, I cant decide if I should buy a BA XR6t or an XR8. I know the xr6t is better in every way, but im just a sucker for a v8, so am leaning towards the xr8. Definately a manual, otherwise ill be throwing 2k down the drain every few years for an auto rebuild.
I was wondering if the v8's are reliable? I havent read much on their reliability so i was wondering if some owners could shed some light on this. I have heard that like all ford 6's the turbo 6 motor is extremely reliable, so i was wondering how the v8 compares. I will go for a late 04 model or newer to get the 6 speed hydraulic clutch manual. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks. |

Take them for a drive, the XR6T and the XR8 are completely different beasts.

sorry but thats a stupid question. they are all the same apart from motor. so you will have the same problem's everywhere else bar the motor.

as long as they are serviced/looked after, they should be both reliable

Xr8 shouldnt have too many faults. generally a well put together unit. only thing that really springs to mind is the sparkplug issues with the 3 valve.
The XRT on the other hand can have little issues with the ecu turning the boost down on occasion, exhaust bolts can come loose. Both liven up a bit with a flash tune, but for more power the turbo you cant go past. they'll take a respectable amount of boost and would be cheaper $ / effort for kw if your looking to mod.

the early v8's have timing chain tensioner problems,the gasket blows out causing the tensioner to leak down causing rattles on startup,they get replaced with a steel (not plastic) tensioner,not too big a job to do.
also the stated spark plug issue xr6t's can have oil pressure problems from s**t oil,causing the inline filter in the oil feed line to block,but for $170 you get an earls filter kit to fix the problem. i love boost so id get the turbo,but a mate of mine wanted a turbo,drove both and liked how the v8 came on the power better so got an xr8

as long as he Auot trans fluid is serviced regularly.. a rebuild should not be required every cuople of years..
and have you not forgotten that manuals run clutches that wear out?? just pick one.. then own the other later on... |

actually have heard the t's are better with an auto as theres no clutch to stuff and you just keep the foot in it. no need to let off

If you start getting serious with mods, the oil pump will need replacing as a safety issue. Mods like under drive pulleys (especially on the manuals) increase the risk of the pump failing with the worst case being a completely destroyed engine, as bits of oil pump gets run through out bearings and lifters etc. Having said that. There's nothing like a great V8. Go test driving, and buy the one that puts the bigger smile on your face. I did.
