I have sprung a bad oil leak, I took the thermo's out degreased the engine bay and it seems to be coming from the lower rright(passenger side) water pump bolt. I am thinking timing cover gasket has let go etc.. The oil is dripping on the front driver's side sump gasket and then onto the crossmember. The thermofans are than spraying this engine oil all over the alternator, pwr steer pump, extractors etc... need some advice.

The lower side of the water pump is covered in a oily sludge. Every thing above the water pump is clean. I have already checked the timing chain tensioner bolt and harmonic balancer seal with a torch and mirror and they are both dry............???



Any idea's of what has let go or is it engine out and spend some $$$$$$$

Gasket on the lower side of timing cover? thats about all I can think of down there that would throw oil. especially if its also got a trace line over the sump too.

hi buddy !i think this is a common problem ! i owned a 94 toyota camry once !
the engine bay looked a little horrible so i pulled out the degreaser & sprayed up the crack of everything in site. well 1 day later driving to work there was a horrible smell of burning oil '
pop the bonnet & s**t me !oil everywhere! so i took the car to the mechanic only to find out that the seal behind the water pump had let go! . 6 months later engine bay was dirty again so out came the degreaser' & hey presto ' oil everywhere again !
answer ! watch were you spray this crap as a lot of engine bay components dont like degreaser including the liquid sealent behind the water pump !

im sorry but you do relise this is a ford site and vastly different from a camry forum but it could also be the timeing chain tensioner o ring

should people that have had exactly the same problem" all be it in a different" make "not try and give him some ideas as to how this happened . my problem was i sprayed that s**t around my oil filter"
1 day later there's oil everywhere! what had happened was the degreaser had not touched the o ring but instead eaten all of the lovely purple locktite sealant out creating an oil soaked engine bay !
just answer the members question instead of attacking other forum members. do fords not use locktite anywhere on engine components!

nope I use a torque wrench, oil breaks down locktite just like degreaser will.

Pretty much only used it on my tailshaft bolts. I like things to come back out without easyouts.

But seriously, if your timing cover gasket has gone it will dump your oil for you, pending where the leak is from, sometimes, as peety has already stated, the degreaser can finish off the issue, removing the built up scum that was to some effect plugging the rest of the leak.

So you know how much oil you lost?

so thats what happened ! i never thought of it that way ! i the degreaser has gotten in and cleaned my engine bay a little to thorough removing the locktite & old grease ' ha ! i guess the old murphys law comes into play here . those two mistakes cost me almost $ 300.00.
