Done and done
 Bought some second hand pacemaker extractors, had them fitted at a shop as well as a high-flow 2.5" cat, the car sounds awesome now! Much deeper exhaust note and has a nice rumble to it, a fair bit louder than before, it's loud-ish but not obnoxious or illegal, Very happy with it!

your exhaust shop was probably talking about tubing the cat, not only hollow it out but put a section through it to make it 100% straight through. kinda massivly illegal though, and fines are horrendous, worse than unvented dump pipes.

Hmm dunno, but anyway what they've done now is fitted a proper high flow cat so no worries about legalities  They are also an authorised EPA testing center and the guy said it isn't illegally loud, just close to it
