i personally think wider offset looks great... if you look at some skyline rims they are the right stud pattern and come in pretty good offset (around +15/+12 i think) but when i tried a mates skyline rims the hub on the AU was too big so the rims wouldn't fit...
i dont think the offset change would worry the hubs / bearings that much...

my AU1 is out the back now sitting on EF/EL black steelies. looks sh|t house and is very close the the guards. esp what BenJ said about bear load etc not to mention overtracking the car, would steer like rubbish and track badly. ACT RTA limit on increasing track is no more than 26mm from standard for that model.

People think that they can change suspension/wheel setting willy nilly. The engineers at Ford / any other company design the whole suspension around these things. They're all interrelated, and what you may consider small changes, will throw things out quickly. Result, excess wear and tear (AU+ is know for worn wheel bearings already, not need to exacerbate that) poor/dangerous handling possible catastrophic failure.
e.g. the difference between my everyday and track alignment settings is less than 1° of camber, and only 1.5mm of toe. Yet it means the difference of an understeery car when pushed to the limits and good tyre wear, and a neutral (if not a little oversteery) car with heaps of front end grip that'll wear a set of front tyres in ~2000k (but is good for about 3 sec a lap at Oran Park, and 4 at Wakefield Park).
