i recently drove my EL xr6 to the central coast and back from campbelltown(its about 2 hours) and i noticed on the way back that whenever i slowed down at a set of lights the oil pressure guage showed a low reading and the light would come on and it would beep at me. the car doesnt have an oil leak and its full of oil, if anything too much rather than not enough. whenever i drove at 100k's the pressure would come back up again but when i slowed down it would fall again. i drove it the day after and its not having any problems atm.
im thinking either: faulty sensor, faulty pump, or i recently changed the oil to this nulon stuff, its 36%less friction or something so im thinking its a possibility it could be confusing the sensor?? HELP would be appreciated |

Oil may be to thin, big ends may be on their way out, could be an earth issue, sender may be buggered.
What oil did you use? as in weight? How many KM's on the motor? Have you checked the earth on the sender? removed and cleaned the sender and cleaned the connection? Better hope its not the bottom end. you would know it if it was, rattles and bangs are typical on a trashed motor. Odds on it may just be looking for a thicker oil like a 15w or if high in km's maybe something thicker again. Bearing wear can cause this issue.

yeah the cars done 288000+ there are no bangs or rattles, its quiet, the oil im using is 15W-40, but its a possibility the oil is too thin and the sensor is picking that up. where is the sender located so i can look at it?

I'd say the pump is getting a little slopy and your bearings are getting on a bit.
At low engine speed the pump can't keep enough oil flowing to create enough pressure. It's made worse when you have been driving for a long time as the oil will heat up more and thin a little more. the band aid fix is to use a 20w50 oil. the real fix new bearings. |

Don't forget a new oil pump too......

yeah i think ill go with the "band aid" fix, as there is no evidence that the pump is stuffed because the pressure only falls when the engine oil gets really hot and thinner. when the engine is just driven day-to-day short trips there is no problem. maybe when the pump fully carkes it ill replace it. i read its located in the sump and really fiddly to change.
thanks guys |

had a similiar problem with my EB daily driver. it'd drop to 1 bar at idle. put Castrol Edge 25w50 and a genuine Motorcraft filter. fixed

changing the pump is typically an engine out exercise.

My old engine used to do it at the drags if i did back to back runs (straight off the return lane and into staging, less then 5mins cool down.) When i rebuilt the engine no one component was 'stuffed' it was stack up of minor wear in all the bearings. You wouldn't even need to strip the whole engine. just pull it out flip it over and take the crank out. have the crank linished and refit it with new bearings. put a new stock pump in it while you're there. it'll cost you %80 to have the crank done $50 for bearings a few dollars for a new sump gasket. |

Cheap fix = thicker oil Proper fix = pull the engine out and repair/replace where needed |

finish it off with some HPR40. you will get oil pressure for a while....
what better time to start a rebuild. I got a block if your keen.
