hi,

I have a 05 BA XR8 with BOSS 260 motor. The following mods are done. 4.11 diff gears, cams, underdrives, full exhaust and tune. Car is also a 6spd manual. Car revs to 6500rpm and makes 270rwkw.

Now there is a scare campaign about these boss motors and their metal singed oil pump gears failing... Apparently the common causes are underdrives due to harmonics, manuals due to snap changes and diff gears due to quicker revving.. Also the high rev limiters are known to munch the gears...

Is this a scare campaign or do i need to run out and get some billet oil pump gears in before my motor is lunch..

Pros.. Well it cant hurt to have them, piece of mind.

Cons... Fpv rev their gt to 6500 with same oil pump gears and similar power. Costs me $1250 to have them installed..

What do you guys think??

I've got a similar list of mods, and have the oil pump upgrade. Mine also cops a flogging at track days regularly.

You should've got it done when the under drives were being installed (much less labour involved). If a shop is doing your performance work, they should've recommended the gears long before now.

There has been more than a few example of failures occurring.

For the price of the gears and installation verses the price of a lunched engine. I think it's cheap insurance.

the way i see it i'd rather 1250 to fit the gears instead of like i dunno 10k for a another Boss motor

gotta keep an eye on the crank tone wheels when underdrives have been fitted. Ive seen too many that flogg the keyway after underdrives have been fitted.

Just get a GT500 pump from the states...about $90U.S. I did it at the same time I changed the tensioners and fitted underdrives too. Plus I used an ARP crank bolt too. The factory bolt is torque to yield and should really be replaced when you take change the balancer.
