I think I've fixed the problem, I did the following:

- New battery terminals, the kind used for car audio (no lugs required).
- Used contact cleaner to clean the connections in the fusible links.
- Disconnected main earth strap, used sand paper and metal brush to clean up all contact points.

Before I did this, my voltage gauge and lights were noticably unstable all the time, especially when idling. Since I did this work 2 days ago it's been working perfectly the whole time.

fusible links is all the fuses inside under the steering wheel??

No, they are the plastic connector things that connect directly to the positive terminal of the battery. They sit between the battery and the driver's side inner guard.

I reckon my biggest problem was my negative battery terminal - it was kinda broken, so the smaller wires that come from underneath the water reservoir weren't grounded very well.

Mine had 3 double plug fusible links right beside the battery and 1 single fusible link slightly further away, kind of under the water reservoir.

I'm no sparky but it sounds like the alternator regulator is not outputting a smooth DC voltage to the car; although I wouldn't think you'd actually visibly see the pulsating in the gauges. How many times does it pulsate her second would you say?

See above - I believe it was my negative battery terminal, the part that the relays etc under the reservior tank hook up too.

I also changed the positive terminal, cleaned out the fusible links and cleaned up the contact points on the earth strap.

Problem has complete disappeared as a result.
