On the upper hand yes, you can use a Fairmont cluster in a XR, you are required to add the dimming resistor.

Be also careful with the wiring - preferably use your EF dash wiring harness - EL dash looms may have different connectors to the EF body harness.

To clarify, are we talking about the instrument cluster?
