Is there a trick to removing the harmonic balancer pulley from the front of a BA I6? Is there a way of 'locking up' the engine so the bolt can be undone? Is it a normal thred or reverse thread?

you mean the Harmonic Balancer? If the car is a manual, put it in reverse, if its an Auto, Park. Normal thread IIRC

i recently did an engine swap (only EF into EB) i left the balancer bolted to the flywheel and jammed a tyre iron in the notches on the rear of the converter while someone held it against the ground if you know what i mean.

put your socket on it and have a long enough extention bar so it hits the ground or wack a few bricks on the ground and just give it a quick burst without starting it might pay to remove the leads so it doesent start and presto its undone too simple.
Dont jam anything into the notches Alan |

yeah don't jam anything that stresses and fatigues metal...
A rattle gun works on percussion and should have no trouble at all undoing that bolt... If you don't have an air compressor they make electric ones too now...

did you guys both miss that the engine is out of the car?
my method does not put any stress or 'fatigue' on anything...

if you have taken the plugs out it will help by putting them back in and rotating the engine until its about to hit a compression stroke.
if you can get it at the right moment you may be able to crack it

if the flywheel / flex plates on it, use a bell housing bolt and a flat head screwdriver to stop the crank turning
