I have an old coil for show and tell.
This coil worked fine, till the weather got rainy, or the engine got washed. These photos show what happens to them. The coil was left dirty as off the car, then cleaned and mounting brackets removed. See where the cracks are that let moisture in.....they are usually under the brackets...so when suspecting the coil at fault, take the brackets off for a better inspection, especially if you've gone to the trouble of taking it off.

I extended the wiriing loom and mounted the ign coil infront of the airbox behind the passenger headlight. Keeps cool, no heat, no oil, no road grime, no water....should last alot longer. Plus I keep another coil in the boot as a spare, very easy too swap over on side of road..

Genuine Ford, Bosch design and manufacture.  They have been a source of trouble for a long time. |

Here are some other causes for coil failure. The coil is getting loaded up by having to pass a spark in corroded terminals, and blown out carbon brushes.

Interesting! I can't say i've seen one of these coils crack like that from being fit normally & thru normal operation. I know the metal tubes are supposed to be crush tubes, but could it have cracked from the bracket being fit too tightly?
Last time i was under the car i was thinking about relocating the coil, but what put me off it was the idea of keeping the primary lead as short as possible. This does remind me that i should take the leads & dizzy cap off & clean them up when i do my next service. Cheers ToranaGuy
