ok, i have read all over these forums for information on this conversion i am about to attempt, which is the I6 into the XF.
The xf i have is a 85 fairmont, so its springs all round and a carby 250 xflow motor, 3 speed auto. It is not a ghia so doesnt have digital dash or anything like that. I am going to start from the front of the car and work my way to the back regarding the parts need to change and what i already know or what i would like to know about the conversion. 1. Radiator- from what i understand, you need to change the radiator as the xf one is to fat and doesnt allow for fans to be placed behind it, and their is no side outlet for the coolant resevior, so from what i have read, all you need to do to put the later model radiator in is drill 2 holes for the 2 main bolts that hold the later model radiator in place. Correct? 2. Motor- ok, i have heard so many stories ranging from it goea straight in, to it is impossible, but i was talking to someone who told me you need to change the sway bar to an e series one, and put xg engine mounts in there, so the inlet manifold will not foul on the strut tower. I have also heard you have to use the log style manifold because the bbm fouls on bonnet. I have heard that the alternator hits on the lower rad support? 3. Auto- From what i know, the auto should not be an issue, but i should put it in while its attached to the motor. 4.tailshaft- I would suppose i would need a custom tailshaft? 5.fuel tank- I have read to use an e series wagon fuel tank and it will bolt right in?? but i might run an external fuel pump i think. I would rather the xf tank, as i cant imagine the wagon tank just 'bolting up' without a huge s**t fight. 6. Diff- should i put the later model diff in? Or keep the xf one in. I dont really think its worth the hassel, because i cant imagine it being worth the chaos i am expecting. Anything would help guys, and i am going to make a killer doc on this in the next few weeks Ps sorry if there is bad spelling/grammer, but im on my mobile. Thanks leigh

You could just get an EFI XF fuel tank. They have an in-tank pump.
Tail shaft will be fine. Dont forget you will also need to get custom power steering and air-con piping as the compressor and PS pump swapped sides from crossflow to OHC. |

Start by getting an XG writeoff.
Every (almost?) part you need will be on it.

xg wreck for wiring aye?
I presume your saying this because of the wiring for dash yeah? If this is the case, if it goes through the way i have it planned at this point in time, it should have a custom dash anyway. at the auctions last week and saw alot of au wrecks going for under 500. Didnt see any xg's though. Is that the issue?

Basicly everything under the bonnet of an XG will fit in the XF.
And yes, I would do the dash too.

Grab a Xg & drop the whole lot in. Dashboard too, would make life much easier. Fit a Xf EFI fuel tank & fuel lines, that will solve that issue.
Is the Xf rear disc brakes? If not, you may need to update the diff to one with discs. Tailshaft is an interesting issue, for length issues & how it bolts up - u bolts or a flat flange? Use the stabaliser bar from the Xg as well. Probably need an Xg sump if you don't grab a whole Xg for parts. I have seen Au wrecks go cheap, and others sell for a bit, depends on how damaged the wreck is. I have seen Au wrecks sell cheaper than ED Fairmont Ghia wrecks, but it depends a lot on who's buying on the day as to prices. Cheers ToranaGuy
