I am about to put a EL diff in to my EF 2 fairmont. I know i need the EL upper control arms can i just get a set of EA - ED ones or do u have to use the EL XR ones ? And why can't i use the EF rear park brake cable.

Cheers Rick

if the el diff u are putting in is an xr one u will need the xr top arms, if not then standard el ones will do. the el top mounts on the diff are in a different position to the ef ones.
the ea - ed top arms are different again.
the ef handbrake will still work on the el diff too

Ok then i would of assumed you could use el gli upper arms on a xr diff. The only reason i asked about the early ea-ed arms is because ford list el xr ones for all ea-ed falcons.

Thanks for ya help mate

the xr6 and xr8 use lowered springs and they lose clearance on the top of the diff housing the xr ones are notched over the axle tubes to make up for this. the xr ones are also harder to find, unless u buy them new (i didnt realise u could still get them)
the el ones are said to be longer too making the pinion angle correct. the el xr diff has the top mounts about an inch further back compared to an ef xr diff

But don't the EL diff's have 2 holes in the upper arm mounting on the diff. One for XR arms and one for standard arms. What i was going to do is get a set of a EA/ED arms and use them since ford list them the same as a EL XR. But from what i can gather i dont know if they will fit. I think the EL standard arms will fit a EL XR diff since they have 2 holes in the upper mounting . But will find out on the weekend.

Thanks for your help

cheers Rick

If you are using the diff with standard height (or arguably 'low' height) springs, you can use the short upper arms as it doesnt change the pinion angle too badly.
If you have superlow springs then you will definitely need to use the rear mounting hole and the longer Tickford upper arms to fix the pinion angle or you will get a tailshaft vibration.

The reason I say 'arguably' is because it seems to be work fine when fitted with 'low' springs, but 'low' is essentially 'XR' height and Tickford fitted them with the longer upper arms.
So you make up your mind.

You can buy Tickford upper arms on ebay for around $90.
Or I have a set I bought from FTG auto slavage, when I thought you couldnt buy new ones, that need new bushes.

Genuine/Original EB/ED arms wont fit on an EL diff when using the rearmost XR mount.

They are the same length as an EL XR arm, but the EB/ED arms are a chunky U-channel shape and they end up resting on the diff, even at normal ride height.

EL XR arms fit EL and EB/ED no problems because they are box shape, and bent over the diff, and alot smaller.

Thanks guys for your all ya help. My EF is low but from what i can see it looks to be around the XR height. I will try the standard EL arms and see how i go. Just out of interest what is a EL XR diff worth these days. I got one out of reasonable low km one 178,XXX for $350

A little bit off topic but how does the EF XR rear end compare to the EL XR (and base model) in terms of handling? I ask as the EL I have now was fitted with an EF XR diff/upper control arms.

I noticed this when I installed my EL XR6 diff in my ED, it had what looked to be a couple of extra mounting holes. I used the ones that the arms worked with, they were also EL XR6 as far as i know.

I'm not sure if it was done for handling, more so that they could get the right pinion angle?

It was done to move to a 3.45 lsd, I know that much, but I guess what i'm asking is would the EF tickford control arms be any better or worse off than the std EL ones, considering the EF's pretty loose back end (although I dont know if this was the case with the xr6).

I think the EF Xr6 & 8 got the revised lower watts link pivot to fix the 'looseness'.
The lower pivot was carried over to the entire EL range.

The longer arms werent just for fixing the pinion angle, they do alter the rear handling as well.

It doesn't handle like my EF if thats any indication 8-) Always good to be sure if things aren't a regression backwards though
