The starting line is : I have an EBV-II with a 4 Speed auto.
Its easy to drive, and quick. I have a T5 sitting in another car. Do I change it over? .. at the moment, My 4 Speed auto lets me play semi-auto if I want and after 200000km of this has not given me any grief at all. I dont have to lift the left foot off the ground at all. Soooo easy. But the T5 - Well I hear the difference is chalk and cheese. I also have an engine which doesnt mind winding out so of course I know the T5 in the EB would feel awesome. I used to have a 5.8 XD with a t5, and it was good fun. Quick, and economical as well. Of course at times I felt lazy as well, like when I was in peak-hr traffic driving into sydney on the old hume. So I want to know : Real world comparisons from people who have converted : Driving comfort, speed, and economy. All feedback appreciated. Nigel |

Change it over!
i had an auto in my car and it was starting to die so i put the t5 in and the thing is more of an animal now! it pulls alot better obviously and you have 5th there as an overdrive

first gear is where you really feel it. If you do the conversion you will never look back. As a comparison, my T5'ed EF ate my mates auto EF by about 4 car lengths to 100kph. the only other difference is that mine has JMM extractors (which I noticed little difference out of on the auto). If I was to start over again I would do the manual conversion before any other mod.

I've been convinced long ago. Just sick to death of damn Commonwhores getting off the line quicker - that's where most of it counts. Should be able to afford mine in two weeks

With a stall converter on your auto you wont have any problems taking off at all.
I was auto like Nick-eeO and then converted. I personally think the downfall is that the car isn't really a cruiser as such no more because more effort is involved and you find yourself always giving it a bit more then you would on the auto! Traffic is a pain in the buttt too! But the manual is a lot more fun and a lot more power and gives you more of a feel/control of the car overall! |

How are we placed for stallies now on the 4 speed?
Are they available? - reliable? - how does it affect the drivability Nigel |

I just never buy a car that's auto. Easy as that.
Autos are slow and less fuel efficient and less fun. *i know most drag cars use autos........but thats different.

in my opinion, T5s have more problems... clutches, forks, firewalls and pedal boxes are common problems that happen.
t5s get annoying to drive after a while, especially in peak traffic, clutch in clutch out clutch in clutch out although T5's are fun!! and faster (to a point). all up. ill take the manual |

Also, i got my firewall re-welded for $50 and if it fails again i'll be strengthening it with 8mm plate steel. That and cleaning the shaft and replacing the clutch cable on a clutch change has returned my clutch to as new status (apart from the harder pressure plate.)

Well the 4 speed autos are an overdrive box. That is the final drive ratio is similar to 5th gear in a t5.
The advantage of manual is more in the take off. .. do I need it. My Auto currently hard-shifts 2-3 sometimes, and I suspect that a replacement S5 will fix that. Mind you I cant believe I am that lazy. Hmmm Nigel |

The worst thing that I found with the auto was 2nd gear, its so lonnngggg. Acceleration is heaps better, although it can be hard to get it off the line because of traction. As far as traffic goes I live west of the blue mountains so traffic isn't an issue and I have generally found that the car is better on juice now. Plus, how many ed fairmont V8 wagons are out there around australia. It sounds great when you change up and down the gears, gotta love that control that a manual brings. The best mod I've done to date. Well worth the 2g I spent.
I just love hooking in over skyline in third, snap into second and just belt the wagon through the dipper and through the esses with that V8 noise bouncing off the walls. I never had that with the auto..... |
