Im getting a whining noise when driving and its happening about 60 km's (mostly at around 80) and changes tone (and gets louder) when steering slightly right..
is this my front wheel bearings? |

Do the 80kmh, and brake reasonably hard, if the noise gets louder, it's tyres, but if it stays the same, bearings....also weave a abit, will change tone.....bearings.

Yeah the EB did identical thing. Was wheel bearings.
Just jack it up and feel the front wheels for movement/freeplay.

thanks guys, ive tried different tyres so its definitely not them and does change tone when weaving..
a bit weird though as i got a mechanic to change them with my front rotors about 10 000km's ago..hmm will have to do it my self this time. |

all fixed
the f**k mechanic didn't bother changing the cone when installing the bearing..so the cone was probably original and brand new bearing.. |

I've put new bearings in and kept the old cones in place...haven't had any noise issues. Mechanic probably didn't pack the bearings with enough grease or a new seal may not have been put in properly or the nut wasn't tightened enough while rotating the wheel causing an awkward seat for the bearings. Since it is fixed...thumbs up to you

Get a new mechanic, that one prolly reuses toilet paper.

Yep, always change the bearing race and shell as a set - since both usually come together in the package.
Since everything's apart, may as well do it properly. Change the seal too if there's a sign of leakage - provided the guy didn't save on grease too . . .

yeh well i supplied the full kit which comes with seal and cups and bearings..
he just changed the bearings and thats it..was f**k hard to get the cups out though, he must of just been a lazy C***.. i only used him as he is dirt cheap on labour, wont be going back to him thats forsure |

Yepp your mechanic is a dill - bearings are machined as a set and are NEVER to be interchanged with a mix of old and new. Whilst some report no issue, it will bring you to a grinding halt more often than not.
The wheel bearing kits for both sides cost me $100 and came with grease(although I used my own). that is total for both sides too. Was messy but a lot of fun as I had never done bearings before...CBC supplied and were Timken I think - not Chinese. Ford wanted $345 for motorcraft parts...joke! |

Timken kits for both sides should only be about $50 max, even retail... You sure it was $100?
I get them for about $30... |

yeh e series were 20 a set, i know the au ones are a lot more expensive..

Do you mean that the cones and the bearing units themselves are machined as a unit? Because alot of rotors come with the cones already installed. That may explain why mine still doesn't feel quite right after replacing everything? |
