How do you adjust the timing on a EF XR8? do you need to bridge a wire like on my EB I6? I know how to use a timing light etc just need to know how to put it into base timing/diagnostic mode. Need urgent help. cheers

You need to bridge the engine STI and GND together on the diagnostics plug. They are the top and bottom pins on the far left of the plug. Bridge the terminals and then start the car, it will do its thing and you will have a short time to get the timing before the ECu switches over to normal mode and out of diagnostics...

If you can't get it to work, you don't have to get into diagnostics mode. What it does is keep your rpm at 1500. Have someone hold it at 1500 or adjust the idle screw so that you can do the timing.

its the big white plug in the fuse pannel near your right knee when sitting in the driver seat.

far left top and bottom pins need to be connected to each other.
i found it heaps easier to use a bit of 10amp wire with a spade terminal on each end.

oh the diagnostic plug? lol easy. my mate wants to advance the timing on his EF XR8 to get a bit more go. he always runs 98 octane so we may be able to push it a bit

Its because the ignition timing is only at its base level when in the diagnostic mode.
At any other point the timing is variable, which you can see happening when you put a timing light on it when its not in diagnostic mode.
