The tag on the diff says 3.23. Are they good gears to use? Are they v8 gears or 6 cylinder cylinder? Is there a way to tell the difference between a v8 diff and a 6 cylinder anyway??
What are the v8 diff gears and 6 cylinder gears anyway?

I have a V8 ef auto with 3.23 diff I think it's just a stock ratio for for later e series 6 or 8 same as the X series auto's had stock 2.92. Although I may be wrong.

well from eb2 onwards the diffs for 6cyl and v8 are the same..(28 spline bw78 series)
3.23 is usually a 6 cyl ratio and the v8 is usually 3.27 .. |

a*** are no difference between 6's and 8's
Stock 6 Manual EF onwards have 3.23:1 Stock 6 Auto Wagons have 3.23:1 Most cars had 3.08:1 Some Fairmonts had 3.23:1 to balance out luxury economy and to cope with load. Ghia's ef2 had 3.45 I prefer 3.23:1 on my manual car, I've had 3.45, 3.08 I've found my motor provides enough torque and revs to suit the medium ratio, but not enough revs for 3.45 and above. Most people on here seem to prefer 3.73 with auto combination.

i'd always been under the impression that 3.23s were a gear revision that was brought in with the EF, so EA-ED regardless of 6 or 8 had 3.27s. sort of like the bw 3.89 - 3.91s.
either way, there is no difference in the gears between 6 or 8 in regards to strength, if thats what you are implying?

Just to confuse the issue --- Or not -- Like KRYTOX said - Wagons and Utes and long wheel base LTD, Fairlanes, are more likely to have 3.23 (including LSD varieties)... 8 or 6. (I am talking the mid 90's E series here...)
A lot of the sedans, Fairmonts, GLi's, XR6's (EF series, sorry) are 3.45 over here in NZ. Previously to that the gear ratios were even taller -- 2.7 and 3.08 or some such? Confused much? |

I should check the ratio of this ED I6 Ghia LSD i have here, i thought it was 3.27:1. Oh well. It is lsd, that much is certain.
I know i have 3.27:1 in my EB Ghia, it's LSD was replaced with another good unit early last year by myself. The one i replaced was 3.27 also. But who know's if it was the original diff or not? The ED is an unknown, the EB Xr8's i have both seem to be 3.27's as well. Cheers ToranaGuy
