Hi,
Just out of total curiousity, where do shims go when replacing the cam with a regrind and how do they stick there? To me they look like little round bits of lead? Tried google but it doesnt bring up what Im looking for

the above pic is a different set up to the falcon..

in the falcon the hla/lifter is in the rocker arm and the shim goes insine the rocker arm between the lifter seat and rocker ...

yeah the pic above is for a dohc engine

the shims for falcons sit inside the rocker arms
i have a spare set or 2 if you want some :)

No dont need any was just wonering Ive never known where they go but people always talk about them, I presume its because when a company takes your old cam and modified it theyve taken a bit of meat off so the lobes are sitting too high and you have to build that difference back up or it wont hit the valve? How do they stay in? anyone got any pictures of it real life in a falcon?>

I've lost sleep over how they stay in too, when i asked a friend he said "if you want a brick layed call a bricklayer, if you want a tap fixed call a plumber, when you need an engine built call a mechanic, dont do it yourself", so i stopped worrying and gave it to someone else to sort out

Funny that, I lay my own bricks, fix my own plumbing but I have never rebuilt an engine (outside of tafe where it wont ever get to be tested properly)

Its something i have been wanting to do, the only thing I don't have confidence in is refitting the engine correctly (sure with enough time and care I would get it right) and getting the timing correct.

They are in the rocker arm itself behind the lifter, which should be stuck in there thanks to its O ring. There is already one shim from the factory in each rocker arm. Its pretty simple if you've seen a rocker assembly before.

This is the best picture i have found to show this, just edited it to label the parts. I think i may have saved this from the Jay's RPD cam install guide..

Basically everything sits inside the rocker bore in that order from left to right. The lifter there is shown in an exploded view, just to show you what's inside it - when you install the lifter it goes in as a "one piece unit" as the 3 parts fit together. Once the rocker gear is tightened down with everything sitting inside the rocker arm bores, the tips of the lifters sits up against the tips of the valves holding it all together.

On an AU engine, the lifters sit in place because of a steep clip around the lifter, which fits into a groove in the rocker arm. But when you put an extra shim in, the clip sits out of the groove so you have to remove the clip, or else the lifter won't fit inside the rocker arm. Then, theres nothing holding the lifter in, except it touching the valve when it's installed on the cylinder head.
