Hey all, wasnt sure if this belonged in this section or the gearbox, suspension and brake one but its entirely a cosmetic thing so i dropped it here.
Ok i have a 2003 BA XR6 and was looking to paint my calipers a bright glossy red (to look like the brembo ones on the fpv range) and started to read up on how to do it, looks pretty easy. However a friend of mine showed me these caliper 'covers' on ebay and i was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these? stupid idea? or possibly really good? heres a link to the caliper covers (not exactly the ones im lookin for but you get the idea) {DESCRIPTION} |

i havent had any experience with the caliper covers, but spraying brake calipers is easy, all you need is:
Masking Tape Plastic Bags Wax and grease remover Preferred Caliper paint colour Couple of rags some sand paper Take your wheel off , wash the caliper and then use to wax and grease remover to get rid of any left overs, give it a light sand and use the wax and grease remover again, wipe it dry, use the masking tape and plastic bags to cover your brake disc and any other parts you do not wish to get sprayed. Make sure its dry and all wax and grease is off then spray away with your paint, leaving about 10minutes in between coats, give it about 3 - 4 coats, let it dry, then move on the next caliper Quite easy man |

I remember reading another thread on here which covered these, basically people said to stay away from them, read plenty of horror stories of the things melting all over your caliper and stuffing it up. I painted mine in red and looks very nice, pretty easy to do and you dont run the risk of melting stuff on them. I used an actual brake caliper paint from Repco.

Not sure about other states but in Vic it is illegal to paint your calipers. If the cops wanna be C*** they can make you strip the paint off. I had to do it to the missus car awhile ago not a fun job. But I wouldn't use those covers ether would trap to much heat in.

Apparently it traps the heat in the caliper.

If cops want to be a d**k they'll get you for anything. They can pretty much defect a brand new car if they want... In queensland you cant drive a modified car on p plates unless its been approved by an engineer or some s**t - friend of a friend got a fine for driving his car because it had an aftermarket head unit in it....
Anyway thanks for the advice everyone - looks like im painting them. Good thing i asked i was bout to buy them the other day and that looks pretty damn good phil |
