gday fellas
quick question. a friend of mines ba shat a trusty 4 speed auto gear box. she was quoted 3 grand for a replacment and fitted. but having lack of money she has asked if she can get a reconditioned one if i can swap them over. im an apprentice mechanic so im handy with the spanners but not having much to do with later fords i have some questions. im pretty sure ford have a special machine/tool for putting the oil in these things. is this true or can i just fill it up to the level like any gear box. also will i have to do anything to the computer to let it know there is a different gear box there. is there any other problems i will have with just swapping the old box for the new? thanks for any help

nothing any different to any other auto trans swap. Fill the box when cold to the level of the filler plug on the RH side of the transmission, unplug/plug back in all the wires and away you go.

hey mate, they do have a fill point on these boxes, but generally the auto shops will pump the fluid in thru the cooling lines so that it cleans out everything then fills it up when it comes out clean.
I've got an auto sitting here collecting dust if your mate wants it, never been recoed and was working fine when i pulled it out and dropped the manual conversion in. He can have it for $600. Cheers, Matte
