G'day, just about to pull the starter-motor from my EF Futura 4Ltr Auto......looks really cramped in there from underneath. Gas mixer and manifold make access difficult from above (looks even harder than gaining access to the dizzy !!). Looks impossible to access the inner / upper mounting bolt from underneath without removing a lot of other stuff first. What do I need to take off to get access to bolts and to get the thing out ?? Any advice or hints appreciated . Thanks.....Steve.

Working from underneath the car and using an extension with socket on end, slot it through all the pipes and wires above the starter motor and onto the top bolt, add the ratchet onto the end once you have got the socket into place and then you should be able to undo it. Done it this way many times without issues, however I have lanky arms and hands.

i just replaced my starter the other day too, as above post^^, i used a 1/4 drive socket set with 6" extension and 13mm socket. make sure to disconnect the battery terminal first too.
i have small hands and was still a painfull job, hoist would have made it easier |

I only have a half-inch drive socket set....does that make it harder ? if the smaller size drive aids access I can borrow one. Thanks guys....Steve.

1/4 drive is easier if u can borrow a set.
there is a brace off the block that supports the bbm intake manifold just above the starter motor which gets in the way of the top bolt. heater tap and hoses sometimes get in the way too |

Just updating !! job done with heaps of groaning, cursing Ford, and bark off the arms (short arms and fingers I guess)....would've been a million times easier on a hoist I reckon ! BUT...after replacing the starter still no start (think the battery charge is low and also the batt is 5 years old - it's been sitting in the shed for a few weeks until I finally found time to do the job - so just get the clattering of the solenoid but no starter engaging). Will charge the battery tonight and try again....or splash out on a new battery lol !!!! Thanks again guys for the hints.....Steve.

BAMBANG wrote: HOW CAN I TELL IF THE ENGINE'S SEIZED Pull the spark plugs out and see if you can turn the engine over by hand, remember it turns clockwise (I am fairly sure, other members feel free to confirm or correct). Socket on the hamonic balancer should help. Hope all turns out ok for you.

Turn the motor over by the harmonic balancer, well try to at least.

Thanks mate...will try it in the morning. When you say clockwise I assume you mean looking at it from infront. Getting fed up with it as it's our spare (third) car and hogging the garage. Oh well....if the worst eventuates I'll probably take off the rego & wreck it (or maybe contact the bloke from Albion Park on the forum who's after an EF body in good cosmetic condition, but I think he wants a sedan not a wagon !!). We'll see what happens tomorrow !! cheers - Steve.

Thanks for your help guys....but the engine is kaputski (yep, after removing plugs I found that number 2 plug has been headbutted by piston - so it's a seized donk , and car will be wrecked....maybe sell the parts on the forum !!! ). Anyone want a white EF Futura wagon on LPG with seized engine (or parts thereof !!!!????. Thanks again and Cheers Steve.
