I am changing to a 5.0 L injected engine with 4 speed auto for my new hot rod
The tail shaft yoke supplied with the engine has the big SYD on it. The size of it is a real problem as it does not fit through the tail shaft yoke (with forms part of a main cross member) Before I go cutting stuff up, is there any need to run this damper - I will be getting the Tail shaft shortened- or is there a smaller diameter damper available that I could change to Thanks in advance Chris

I'm fairly sure it's there for harmonics only.
Finding a tailshaft without one shouldn't be hard. I know my mates EF 5ltr didn't come with one. |

The damper can be pressed off the yoke, or just get any 28 spline 1310 series slip yoke and replace it.
Are you using an alloy ford shaft? How long is the shaft going to be? How heavy is the car? How much horsepower are you going to put thru it? When I used to work in a driveshaft shop, we did a few shafts for hot rods. We used to use the falcon alloy shafts, shortened to the right length, and fitted with the correct uni's for the application. After welding, while the shaft was still in the machine, we would finish the alloy with various different emery cloth, with CRC, working down to about 600 grit. Then we would remove the unis and yoke, and give it back to the customer, and it would be fully polished. It would come up like chrome! Then it was returned to us to be re-assembled, and balanced. If it needed any weight, and alloy shafts never used very much, we used mag wheel balance weights, and they were glued on with special stuff, same as OEM. The customers were always very happy with the finish, and the very light weight. Also, you get the chrome look, for the show-oriented people, but it was still very strong, for the safety concious. Not too expensive, for the final result. Good luck.

I don't have an alloy shaft so I was going to use a steel one that I have - it is a much narrower shaft too The shaft will be about a metre long Car weighs about 1100 kg Engine is stock standard and will likely stay that way Thanks for the info Chris
