im so sick of my ed running rich. ive tried a few things and am running out of ideas can anyone please help.
the next step im thinking of doing its changing to a hotter type spark plug. what are people thoughts on this ive done the following to try and correct the problem: - replace O2 Sensor (with a geuwine Ford part) - replace fuel filter - replace air filter - injector clean (on-car) - replace spark plugs - replace ignition leads - tested coolent temp sensor (working fine) - diagnostics check (all tests passed) - cleaned rotor cap and button - fuel press. test (passed) As it sits now the A/F ratio is 13.67/1 and im getting 400k's per 62 litre tank of optimax Also if it helps when i pulled the head off the head and top of the pistons were fairly carbonised is there a way of cleaning this without pulling the block apart (or is there just no point) sorry for the long post but if anyone has any thoughts it will be much appreciated, thanks agian

It might have been what my problem was - the ECU.
I pretty much did all the stuff you did, but to no avail - but when I replaced the ECU all the problems went away. So try grabbing one from one of the sponsors here or a wrecker or something. |

13.67 A/F ratio - i wish! thats pretty lean i was under the impressions thats pretty well spot-on? somewhere between 12.5-13.5 is good yeah? 14's etc are really lean... 10's are really rich - where mine is at

Adjustable fuel reg or aftermarket chip if you have some spare pennies.

i dont think so, perfect A/F (also known as stoichimetric or lambda 1) is 14.65:1

If you can get it on a dual trace labscope & watch the injection pulse & 02 sensor voltage.... rev engine just over 1000rpm & check readings... 02 must be changing above & below .5 volt & injection at aprox 4-4.5ms. The only thing that effect fuel changes is any load factors from the motor, if these changes are'nt being monited by the ECU then replace it, as long as the voltage on the 02 sensor is changing the ECU will hold it in stoich. 14:7:1
I almost forgot, check the ACT sensor have found on some cars with age that there is a build up of carbon so its also giving the ECU fales reading. Hope this helps Joe C/M |

the a/f ratio should change under different loads of the engineand can be anywhere from 12's (rich) to 16's lean mine runs at about 13 at idle 11.5 under load and bout 23 under decel im not to sure bout the factory computer though i get bout 330-350 from a tank

This sounds about right from my understanding of the topic, under load it should always be slightly richer to prevent any form of heat seizure and to prevent pinging and detonation.

You could get a Unichip or else the dodgy cheap way get an adjusable fuel reg which someone else said. E-series always run rich from factory. Maybe spend the money on a few mods to get more air into the engine - extractors and exhaust and free up the intake a bit.
