hi all

i have a ef gli 4speed auto, when i drive it like a grampa and not put my foot down its fine the gear box is good, but when i put my foot down it revs to 3500-4500rpm and holds the gear then 5 to 10 seconds later it changes but i usually back off before it redlines, and when it does change if i take my foot off the accelerator to slow down it kicks when it changes down a gear. so what im trying to explain is, when i drive it like a grampa and dont put my foot down the gearbox is fine its good, but when i puy my foot down it revs and holds the gear and kicks when it down shifts, so im thinking its an electrical problem like the solenoid or something, i dont think its mechanical cause my gear box is quiet and never slips, any help would be great

cheers

wow couldent have put it in better words my self, i have the exact same thing

only if i stop accelerating just before it changes gears does it hold in that gears for a good 3secs nothing like 5 or 10 tho

and its a hard shift to

try flooring it and letting it change before u stop accelerating as i find the problem goes away apart from the fact i flaw it for an 80km road and mine changes at 80 so mmmm

yer i maybe exaggerated a bit there with the 5 to 10 second part lol yer ive been doing that just as its reving and sounds like its about to change i back off the accelerator then let the revs drop a bit then floor it and it changes but yeh its a hard shift , do you how to fix it or does anyone??

i dont reckon its a problem with the trans more so the way we drive it

iv been told there is nothing wrong with my trans and its been doing it for a good 2years now ( well ever since iv started driving it) and im the only one whos flawed it and backed off at 80 my dad keeps going and my mums lets it change into second at about 30kms or something

best of to just let it change first before u back off and u will be right

Its not as easy as just saying put in a T5. There is a bit of work involved and costs to do that. And dont forget many autos are quicker than manuals.

a few questions:

- does the trans stay in gear, or does it free rev
- has the diff ratio / speedo drive gear been changed
- does the speedo work without dropping out / jumping
- could also be map sensor or throttle position sensor - are you able to swap any of these with another vehicle?

1 not sure what you mean by " free rev" but when i put my foot down it revs to 4000 rpm then the needle stops it doesnt redline then it holds the gear and slows down like theres no drive well thats what it feels like

2 my gear ratio, diff and driveline is stock

3 my speedo works fine , not exactly sure what you mean by dropping out / jumping

4 i could get a map sensor and throttle position sensor from the wreckers but im not 100% sure if they work or if their faulty

man, from everything i've read so far sounds like you've got a problem with the S5 solenoid in your box,

i bet if you described this to a gearbox technician and mention the S5 he'd laugh in understanding
