hi all just had my ed xr6 break down on me today, at first it would struggle to turn over then it would only hold idle for about 1 second then die, rac told me its the fuel pump.... so i changed it and now it wont even hold idle for a second.... so i changed the fuel filter and black fuel came out of the old one! (so thats the obvious problem!) however with the new filter it still wont start... has the old filter released stuff up the fuel line and blocked it and or blocked each injector??
i need to get onto fixing this in the morning as i need my car for work.
whats the best way to find exactly whats wrong with it?
any help or ideas would be much appreciated
thanks
Jesse

hi there assuming you havent fixed this problem then i would first look at the fuel line going to the injectors if that flows fuel out fine then the second issue could be blocked injectors. also when i had an issue with the fuel pump i found out that it wasnt thew fuel pump it was a blown fuse that powers the brake lights. once i found this out it was as good as gold. hope this helps fellow ford man.

cn u hear the pump prime when u turn the ign on, will run for a few secs?
possibly the pump is faulty, the black gear in the filter had to go thru the pump first
or the relay in the engine bay, u will find it under the coolant tank, green relay

just had this relay s**t itself on my ef wagon ! wife ran out of gas on the highway, flicked it across to petrol and got nothing ! ....we took out the pump as we weren't aware of this relay at the time as it had fallen down upside down off its holder and out of view ! so i need a relay and a fuel pump seal as it came to bits when i removed the pump....

155 for relay from dealer and 30 for seal.... moral of the story, dont let the wife run out of gas !!!!

spent 2 hours testing voltage and pissing about for a 5 min relay replacement... it was full of rust and crap inside, absolutely rooted !

thats so annoying! 155 for a relay though?!!! ive got about 20 spares, the dealer just made you pay for the shape of the relay when you can just use the odinary ones and join the wires!! fords little trick to make bulk money i guess

DAMN!!! fuel pump stopped working again last night! so i put a new one in.... went perfect for five minutes and then a fuseable link started smoking and melting up! checked the relay and one of the wires melted too. so i replaced the fuesable link and the relay and now im back to sqare one.... pump dosent work again! im going in circles and i cant work out what could possibly be the underlying problem here!?
any ideas anyone?
cheers

Gotta be a short somewhere in the system. Check the wiring loom under the rear seat, maybe it's been damaged.

Cheers

I had this problem recently. The fusable link that melted also runs to the ECU relay, the brown one next to the green one under the coolant tank. CHeck that cause if the link fried, theres a good chance it fried the supply to the ECU relay, and the pump wont run if it is rooted aswell.

finally, got it sorted, it all began with what i thought was a dead fuel pump, so i swapped it with one i had from my other car that was working well.
that still didnt solve the problem so i called in a sparky and he changed the fuel relay and spliced
an aftermarket relay on.
car ran for a week or two and then died again.
this time round i could hear that the fuel pump had died as it was stuggling to run and made crunching noises.
so i swapped it back over to the original one. it started it ran and i left it running for about five minutes until i noticed smoke coming from under the hood.
what had happened was the relay that the sparky put in had a high tolerance and was overloading the wiring instead of blowing, which resulted in the fuseable link burning hence the smoke...
(i know now why the fuel pump died and was crunching.... dont use aftermarket relays for fuel pumps is the lesson here :D )
so after putting in an original relay it still didnt start..... called a different sparky and he found that the stock relays were burning out within seconds of the car starting.
we assumed there was a short in the line and ran new wiring, still not starting he mentioned that sometimes the fuel pressure reg sometimes jams and blows relays that way.
so i changed that too and it still wouldnt go!
a brand new fuel pump solved the problem, turns our the initial one i had was faulty!
if the original sparky knew what he was doing this would have been an easy fix.
happy to say its running again and much better then before. hope this helps people in the future. cheers for all the advice guys.
