haha internal has an actuator off the side of the turbo that opens a valve/flap in the rear housing of the turbo. external is fitted to the turbo manifold and vents exhaust gas. both can blow off to atmos or be plumbed back. very basic explaination but try wikipedia or something

External .. In this case a Tial gate..
Here is a modified internal or integrated gate.. Not the back of flapper has been milled away and dump pipe is extended over rear of housing with divider to reduce turbulence.. Normally exhaust come out gate turns 90* into exhaust housing flow.. Which causes turbulence and in low boost may NOT vent enough.. Here's the other side.. These are 650 h.p turbo's.. Two of them on a 330 V8 make 482 rwkw.. Here is a std integrated wastegate on Daihatsu charade..
