when you fit a big aftermarket cam to a EA-D do you have to shim the HLA's? and if you do where to you buy them from and how do you do it?

most cams require 1 extra factory shim (2 per lifter). You can buy them from ford, but i'd just be going to a wrecker..

ok sorry, now edited

remove rocker gear , then remove the hla's (lifters), the shims go in the rockers with the original ones, make sure u get them in the right way up too otherwise u might get noisy tappets

I'm not sure if this is the correct way, but what I did was use a blunt nail and pushed it through the top of the rocker arm where there is a little hole. Due to the old retainers holding the HLA's into place, you might need to give the nail a bit of a tap to get them out. Don't think there is any harm in a bit of hammer tapping...afterall the shim/tappet assembly is designed to be tapped.

Once the HLA falls out, the shim usually follows. If you can, note the way the shim should face (I forget which way...someone will enlighten) and double stack the shims when you put it back in. Might be a good idea to give the inside of the rocker arm a clean to remove residual retainers.

If you are reusing the HLAs, you will notice that they won't stay put in their rockers since the retainers are probably broken or not even on the HLAs anymore. To get past this, get some tape and tape around the rocker arm and tappets (refer to image), install the rocker assembly onto the head and push the rockers onto the valve stem/spring thing and then remove the sticky tape before you tighten the bolts down.

Hope that helps.

Question, does not having the retainers in cause any undue wear?

If the cam is a regrind, then yes the HLA's will have to be shimmed the correct amount to make up for the amount ground off the base circle of the cam. Obviously with billet cams, no need for extra shims. Wade Cam regrinds require an extra standard sized 1.9mm thick shim to make up for the amount they grind off, but other places could grind off more/less (with my regrind i only needed an extra 1mm shim) so it's best to check with the actual place grinding it to see how much they have ground off/how much shim it will need.

This picture might help. Everything goes back into the rocker arm in this order from left to right. The standard shim gets put in with the side with the 3 grooves facing down towards the valve. The picture also shows the lifter when it is pulled apart.

Nope, shouldn't cause any extra wear as the retainers are there to help hold the lifters in the rocker arm making it easy for removal/refitting of the rocker arm assembly. I'm not using any retainers with my HLA's, especially after seeing what happens to them after a while, they become brittle and basically crumble inside the rocker arm bore lol

changed cam. nothing is going right!

the tensioner won't reset! now you wind it anti-clockwise to tighhten it and it should just bottom out right? the chain has heaps of slack still and clicks really loud when you crank it

with a reground cam you have to add more shims as said before...this moves the whole assembly down...so you also have to remove the spring retainer from inside the top of the HLA. It fits into a groove in the body. Dont put it back in on reassembly as it wont go back into the groove and prevents proper functioning of the HLA. Its always a good idea to use a vernier cam gear to be able to get the timing spot on...remember that Wade cams and probably others can be 2 or 3 degrees out after the regrind.

I'm about to buy either a CMS St2A or Wade AU1645A cam. How much are the lifters to buy? Does anyone on here sell them?! Thanks. Phil.

you should be able to find a whole rocker assembly at a wrecker for about $30... they should have a set of shims in them.

If you absolutely want to buy them new, they are about $7 EACH from Ford, and you need 12 of them.

I don't know specifics about EA-ED rockers, but found a cheap and effective solution for my EF. The HLA is about 11mm diameter, so I bought a handful of 5mm 316(A4) stainless steel washers from a hardware merchant for about $5. They are 10mm O.D. and about 1mm thick, basically identical to the extra shims you see in KWIKXR's pic (above).

If the EA-ED HLA is a different diameter, you may need be able to use a different washer.
