The tappets (we usually call them HLAs) gum up over time and don't work properly. To rectify this, try adding some lifter treatment:
http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Lifter ... d_Tune-Up/ If that doesn't fix the noise, then you'll have to replace them with a new set. You'll also need a new set of HLA retainers (if you haven't got extra shims and a reground cam). The old retainers harden & disintergrate over time.

I had the same prob a while ago in my EF Falcon, I just went straight to replacing the HLA's its pretty cheap and at least you will know they are new and it will take a long time for that to happen again.

what happens if you have this problems and don't fix it? Will it break stuff other than tappets themselves?

yes it will break something, best of changing them, if its noisey while at high rpm ever thought about the oil pressure isnt enough

Just filled car with 20w50 yesterday and it helped a lil bit but noise is still there...

how loud is it? sometimes the tops break off. which means nothing will fix it but replacement.
otherwise you can pull them apart and clean them up |

Hey
I put the nulon stuff in my wagon and it's only been driven roughly 50 kays and the HLAS in my car have quietened down a lot and my wagon had sat in a car yard for over 6 months doing nothing unregistered and barely even getting started, so yes this stuff works and it was worth the $11 it cost cheers bear |

Food for thought i replaced my hla's 6 months ago with ones from Bursons, no o ring on them, a few weeks later the ticking came back. Thought it must be something else so replaced the timing chain tensioner, but still ticking. Opened the rocker cover again only to find 2 already broken after only a few weeks of normal driving. Got replacements with the o ring from Skaf auto parts bankstown for half the price ($6) with the o ring and still perfect.
