all but rebuilt my 400 (a long ongoing process with lots of traps) and i am wondering about replacing the fuel pump. it will only be a road warrior without to much thrashing so i don't need to go the whole hog of a complete electric (holley type) system. can i get away with a standard airtex type replacement or go with something with a bit more flow? cost is a problem (within reason).

i have used a mechanical pump on my cleveland 234rwkw and they wont keep up in the higher rpms, 4500rpm upwards.
i used the standard replacement fuelmiser brand, cost $80 i then tried a high flow holley mechanical and it would rev to 5000rpm, it cost $130 i had to upgrade my fuel lines to 1/2" as well as the pickup in the tank and fit a holley blue electric and reg. i guess it just depends on how u drive it |

i won't be going over 4,500rpm much at all. 5000rpm tops and rarely, for short durations. i can't afford the speeding tickets or the damage bill if it blows up. it should be more of a torque monster lower down anyway (403ci)

The Holley mechanical pump is rated to 80 Gallons Per Hour, and will be good for most street cars with moderate power. Will suit your rig just fine. Nice looking part too. The p/n is 12-854, goes for about $100.00 or so.

what are the airtex items rated at? i have been doing a bit of surfing and cannot find any specifications.

No idea.
Mr Gasket do a chrome version, also 80gph, for about the same price. I'd stick with the Holley one, if it were me.
