G'day guys,

I've just purchased a June '98 EL Falcon Futura. At the moment, my ears are pricked up to make sure that all is running as it should be. It has 133,000kms on the clock.

There is a strange clicking noise which is only evident while seated within the vehicle. It appears as though it is comin from the front-left side of the car, and is only audible while under load. The clicking sound does not increase in speed - it is a constant clicking noise only audible while on the throttle.

I don't think it's an engine component (ie lifters, etc), as the clicking noise does not ever increase/decrease in speed.

The noise isn't that loud, it's just annoying. Especially while driving with no music playing and all the windows up!

Thanks guys!

clicking will probably be your BEM if its not related to speed/rpm.

G'day again people;

I've finally managed to spare a little time to investigate this annoying noise further, and can confirm that it is coming from the engine bay...

Specifically, the clicking noise is coming from just behind front-left indicator, next to the headlight.

It only occurs while under throttle - I got my girlfriend to depress the throttle slightly while depressing the brake and traced the noise to that area.

Any further ideas or suggestions, now that I can confirm it is not coming from within the interior.

That would be your carbon canister or purge canistor,a line runs from the tank to that, then back to the manifold

that's definitely the one! After doing a kittle eeaserch, the symptoms appear consistent with thatof a noisey charcoal canister/purge filter.

How much are these normally worth to replace? And where would I best try and source one?

Best way to either, go to the wreckers and grab one or try fraud.

It is actually your purge canister solinoid. The same happens on my AU V8 fairlane. There is no real way to fix the problem other than taking it out and wrapping it in a cloth and taping it up (to deaden it). If you go and buy a new one, it will just start again in a few months.

My suggestion is to just get a nice loud exhaust so you cant hear it!!!!

Where abouts is the purge canister solenoid located exactly? I'm a bit of a perfectionist and can't stand any of those annoying rattles/squeeks/clicks, so will hve to attend to this!

I located the charcoal canister and wrapped it up in a significant amount of cloth efore fixing it back into place, althoug that did nothing for the clicking noise.

If I can find out exactly where this solenoid is, I'll just swap it over with a few other from some wreckers!
