FOr the past few years my steering wheel has been about 40 degrees turned to the right to make the car go in a straight line. This is due to a knobjockey at a suspension center doign wheel alignment with the steering wheel offcentered and winding the tierod/end on so tight that the thread inside seized and now will not unseize, even with a big f**k wrench and oxy. I'm about to fix the issue and replace the whole steering rack, but I am wondering if it is possible to just replace the tie rod straight out of the steering rack? If so, how?
I'll Probably just replace the whole rack as I have a good one sitting here out of my fairmont wreck but I'm just curious if it would be easier. |

If you take the rack boot off the end you need to fix, you will see that you can remove the rack end fromt the rack itself. It should unscrew, there may be a lock tab or similar to undo. Maybe look at the spare rack first so you can see what to do. Good luck.

Not the tie rod end... the tie rod itself, which connects to the steering rack via a balljoint inside the boot.

Yeah, where it attaches to the ball joint inside the boot, the whole tie rod, including the ball joint should unscrew from the rack. Take the boot off and have a look-see.

I get it, Thanks May just replace the whole rack as there is steering wheel play and it appears to be the rack, not the mainshaft unijoint.. |

Take the boot off and have a look-see. there is a crush washer to be unbent and removed before you can unscrew the rods,remove cable ties from boots then clearly mark the old rods at the tyre rod end and at the rack ends on both sides. then lock the steering ,knock out the rack end from spindle pull crush washers and unscrew tyre rods. put it back as close as original and then get a full wheel alignment |
