Hey i am pretty keen to pick up a J3 chip for my stock EF.
Will it up the performance much while car is stock? And can i get it now while car is untouched, touch it, then re tune it? Or am i better off just waiting for the headers, zorst ect? Cheers

better off waiting till u get what uv said and a cam, chip gave me 10rwkw which i did not notice at all, all it did was stop my car from stalling from the cam
also id be looking at a capa eliminator chip rather than j3

Better off waiting mate, no point tuning until it's all set up the way you want and dyno'd.

Won't make much of a difference on a near stock engine as the above guys have pointed out. Do your headers, 2.5" cat back exhaust and some intake mods first. When, or if, you upgrade the cam for a reground profile then start thinking about a J3 chip to fine tune it.

As the guys above have said, while you can get a chip to suit a stock engine to get some more economy and torque from it (especially if you run premium fuel), if you have immediate plans to modify it you're better off waiting, purely to save the cost of the initial tune. If your mod plans are a while out, you may save enough money from the economy gains to cover the cost of putting a chip in it now.
The chips can be re-tuned as many times as you like. Jason

Heresay like this really frustrates me!
The results you get when tuning are dependant on the car, how far wrong the tune was to begin with, and the tuner responsible for creating the tune, not the brand of memory chip you insert into the ECU. If people use a stock XR tune on a J3 of course this isn't going to net the result of a custom tune when you have a modified engine... you have to pay for a dyno tune to get the best results. There are plenty of cars with more than a 10rwkw gain on http://www.tiperformance.com.au/owners_gallery.php. There's a 300rwkw EA turbo! There is plenty of info out there if you want to do some real research before opening your wallet... Jason
