G'day all,
My XR8 didn't want to start and I got the RAA out, sure enough, a few taps on the starter and she fired up, and he says that its a bit dodgy and needs to be looked at. So I thought I would buy a new one off the shelf and instal it myself. I read up in the manual that a few bolts and a few wires and she'll come out from underneath. Now I'm am no mechanic but will tackle the easier of jobs. Is it really this easy or is it going to be one of those things that when i get half way through that I need some special tool or drag my lad out for his small hands. Any advice/tips will be appreciated. Cheers Tim |

easy job, few bolts and wires. shouldnt be a problem.
Id say the solenoid is getting sticky in it.

It's one of the easiest jobs you can do...
I would jack it up, on stands and work from under car.. Also check the solinoid switch wire is connected properly ?? A high resistant joint here will cause similar issues.. Oh yea disconect battery BEFORE you start.. The cable is always live...

Did mine today, was 3 half inch bolts and 2 wires, top bolt can be a little bit of a pain to get to,but as long as you`ve got a long socket extension you`ll be fine, takes no time at all to take out and put in.Easy job.

Top bolt should be simple, in my AU, the bolts run from the back of the bellhousing.

{USERNAME} wrote: Also check the solinoid switch wire is connected properly ?? Agreed. Mine needs a wiggle occasionally and off she goes! Nearly 400,000 on the original starter too. Starter swap is an easy job. {USERNAME} wrote: Oh yea disconect battery BEFORE you start.. The cable is always live... Excellent advice. It's so easy to forget to disconnect the battery, so make sure it's the first thing you do. 300-400 amps from the battery will make you feel like you've been hit by a locomotive. If you live to tell the tale. I heard about a guy who's watch was melted into his wrist when grabbing a spanner dropped across the two battery terminals... Mike
