Hey,
I have been pondering if there is a way to manually overide the lockup on the torque converter? like wiring a siwtch in so that when you flick it the converter will lock at any speed, therefore if you are up it and want the most power you could just lock the converter to give direct drive? does anyone think this is possible or if it would be sucessful? |

Yeah - I couldn't find the post, but I think it was Bozz maybe who made a little circuit to do just the thing. Maybe it was on FM1.

Yeah, bozz wired one up on his I6.
You need a switch that runs +12v to the torque converter lockup solenoid - you need to lookup which wire on the TCM is repsonsible for this. Pretty easy really. I messed around with a switch... It will only lockup in 3rd/4th. Heavy acceleration will cause the lockup plate to slip and will wear it out - that's bad, mmmkay? Good for crusing economy... dont pull up to the lights with it locked, lol.

How strong are they tho? is it strong enough to stall it? if it isn't it would be pointless exercise as you would not want it locked under any accelleration otherwise it would slip? |

Well the thing is, its not design to have that much load on it.... its designed to be locked/unlocked with minimal rev differential between engine and gearbox. So it will slip under heavy acceleration.
Yeah it binds strong enough to stall the engine to point where it bucks and shunts.

I did this to my Nissan Patrol. the clutch pack in the convertor is about the size of a clutch disk in a 9" diff. It would stall the engine at the lights. I also installed a trans temp guage. cruising with the convertor locked up dropped trans temps heaps, as well as using it at about 60kph. factory they dont lock untill about 90kph.
it was also great when towing, to keep the temps low. |
