How long can you leave 2k base coat (colour) before applying the clear coat???

One of my cars has been sitting at the spray painters for the last 2 months with the 2k base coat (colour) applied. The spray painter has stopped working while under going chemotherapy.

I'm just trying to work out what to do from here. All material and work done to the car have been paid for but I would like to get the car finished even if I have to take it else where.

Is it still ok to spray the 2k Clear on or has it been left too long?

I've spoken to one other spray painter so far but they used a different paint system and wanted to sand the car right back and start again and quoted accordingly.

u leave it about 15-20 minutes before the clear goes on.

the car will just need a quick rub back with 800w&d and mask and paint again, unless there's damage the new painter has seen that needs repairing

the clear should be painted straight away but as long as the car hasn't been in the sun in just base for to long it should be ok!
If has been in sun to long better to spray one more coat of base then clear..

so u are saying it should be ok if it's been sitting inside a workshop for 2 months u can just put the clear on?
not what i would recommend, i would be scuffing it back, a few coats of base coat then the clear.

i would be suss on why he didnt clear it in the first place, maybe he wasn't happy with the repairs or prep underneath.



if u asked 5 painters u will probably get 4 or 5 different answers like anything else

Only house of colour basecoats are ment to be able to handle being left for a longer period of time.

I have been doing Car painting for 8 years and would never leave a car in basecoat over an hour let alone over night. I would sus out this dude that painted it in the first place to see where he got to on the job. Any new painter you get will prob want to know why its only in basecoat with no clear and should know that it will need to be sanded before any more work can be done.

Thanks guys, your help is appreciated. I`m currently in Canada and the car is being painted back in NZ so I haven't been able to see whats been going on.

My understanding was the same as both of you let it flash off for about 10-20 minutes and then straight in with the clear coat.

I`m not sure why the guy didn't clear coat it straight away and with him having cancer I don't think he will be in a position to finish the job for a while either.

Regardless; the base coat on the car it will have to be sanded before more paint can be applied. I'd rather get the base coat resprayed than risk sanding it back and having any thin areas as the car is sparking burgundy.
