I have been charging my battery overnight n an AC charger, the resultant charge is barely sufficient for the starter motor, so I have to use jumpr leads to start it. How do I determine if the battery, starter or alternator is the problem?Do alternators commonly fail on EFs?
Also, having done the resistor mod to convert to 5 speed, I'm finding that when I rev the car wont settle back to idle (i.e. it will stay at 2500 rpm for 3 seconds) Is there a way to fix this?

to test the alternator start the car and pull the positive terminal off the battery if the car still runs the alternator is fine.

to test the battery and starter go vist and auto electrician

if you put the battery on charge overnight and the car barely turns over ... well your battery is stuffed, its not taking or holding charge...

Does anyone use a multi meter these days?

When your cars running check the Volts, if its up around 14v the alternator is working.
When the cars off if its not holding 12v the batterys RS....or you have a drain somewhere.

If you have a servicable battery (one with caps on top) open them up and look to see if the water is covering the cells. (If you can't see cells the water should be around 1cm from the top)
If they are low top them up (your ment to use demineralised water) but I just boil the just and let it cool.

You may not have to buy a new battery.
But you may aswell.
