My guess is the switch for park. Try pressing the shifter forward and start it. Seen it happen a few times on a friends car.

Inhibitor switch maybe faulty. Bolts onto the passenger side of the box. It only allows the engine to start in Park and Neutral.

Yeah, I had the same problem with my AU1 got sick of moving it from N to P so i took it into ford and they replaced it for it.
Its only like 1-2 bolts, and no oil leaks out .... Laticia.

Also have a look to see if the linkage needs adjusting before replacing the inhibitor switch.
Can you select 1st without any difficulty? And when you do select it does the car go back to first as it should? Maybe try that at low speed when the car is in second gear.

Yeah this happens on the odd occasion for me too. I just slam the shifter down to first and then back into park and it starts first go, not a problem.
I wouldn't worry about it unless it's doing it ALL the time.
