Took a look at the Nc's p/s fluid and it looks like coffee with skim milk so a change would be good. Never changed p/s fluid before. What do I do? I also was told to make sure there is no air locks or I'll have problems. Its a Nc 1993 5L. Majority of work I've done on cars have been without p/s so Im a bit clueless guys.... sorry for the stupid quizz. Help would be good.

Have you got some Ford R1-424 power steer fluid???
Your gonna need about 3 litres of it. Jack the front up, enough so the wheels are off the ground. Drain the pump if possible. Remove the return line from the pump and run it into a 20lt drum. No running of the engine is required. Fill up the resviour, and turn the steering wheel from side to side watching the fluid coming out. Continue doing this till the fluid gets as clear as it will. Then refit the return line, fill the res, then turn from side to side, topping up as required. After the level has settled, start engine and turn from side to side, listening for cavitation.....it shouldn't have any. Put back on the ground and retest under load.

It does take some time and use to bleed the air out of the E series pumps.
I generally get as much out as possible idling the car and turning the wheel with the filler cap off and then take it for a drive. Leave it sit for a bit to let the air rise to the surface and repeat. Takes a few goes but easy enough. The pumps are VERY noisy when there is air in the system. If the old fluid is fairly ordinary it cant hurt to out a bottle of power steering conditioner in as part of the refill to condition the seals etc.

The conditioner's not a bad idea - most likely the existing fluid with be Dexron II or III.
Around the EFII's or later 424 was introduced. Use it if you can as mentioned. I don't think you'll need to replace seals due to it - someone correct me ??

I'm running the 424 fluid in the wifes '01 Magna V6.....no dramas there, and I ran it years ago in my EA when 424 was coming out, and I have it in my ED.....no dramas with any of them.

the thing i noticed between the different fluids..
was when i got a s/h ef pump that had been recently reco'd and had dexron in it, but when i got it i drained it and used the 424 fluid in it, and soon after it started to seep oil from the front seal.. changed back to the dextron and it dont leak anymore... may be coincidence????? |

Thought I might add if you are flushing and have used more than a bottle to do so and it still looks crappy, its just air in it that makes it look like pink slushy. We went through 3 bottles before we figured that out.
