I have a pre smartlock 4spd auto EBII and I'm converting it to a T5 manual.
The manual ECU I have is smartlock and I'm happy to use it if I can.
Can i simply buy a smartlock ignition switch and run a couple of wires to the ECU or is there more to it?

You will need to install a Smartlock BEM as well as the ignition barrel.
Any of the EBII/ED/EF/EL BEMs will work as the Smartlock codes are all the same in the Eseries.

The wiring is - Ignition switch signalling to BEM and one wire (the Smartlock code line) to the ECU.

You'll need to get some of the wiring out of a donor car (especially the ignition connectors).

Best option could be a Smartlock EBII or ED BEM as the plugs may be more compatible except for the additional wires as described above.
The keyless entry function will operate (just need to retrain) as that is all the same as well.

Another option is to leave your BEM in situ and add another one and only wire in the ignition/code wire circuits.

I assume you have a EBII or ED ECU as EF won't plug in and EL will need fitment of the BBM.

This may sound like a simple question but whats a BEM?
The car does not have keyless entry so will I have to make sure the donor car doesn't also?

The BEM is the Body Control Module (or Body Electronics Module.
It controls the locks (keyless or not), wipers, etc.
In High series models also control dome dimming, instrument panel lights, etc.

Actually, I overlooked something... must be Monday-itis....

The Smartlock function in the EBII-ED is via a seperate smartlock module. It is Red in colour and behind the dash right above the handbrake lever.

In the EA-ED the BEM is beside the radio, rhs, in the centre "pod" area that the radio sits in.

In the EF/EL Smartlock is part of the BEM module.

So, even easier, get a barrel, Smartlock module and wiring (suggest the dash loom if you can get it), strip out the relevant wiring and viola !.
Only issue (minor) will be the door lock keys will be different to the ignition key (unless you pickup the door handles as well).

information above is a bit incorrect. EBII and ED with smartlock utilise a smartlock module. This is the red box above the handbrake on smartlock EBII-ED. You don't need to touch your BEM in order to install smartlock.

EF and EL's on the other hand have the smartlock module and BEM together in the one box.

It is much easier to wire in a smartlock module from a ED then a whole new BEM from a EF or EL

The other alternative is a smartlock override module, which sends the ecu all the signals it needs to operate, without all the associated smartlock hardware (BCM/BEM, ignition barrel etc)

Sorry if it has been asked somewhere else but i would like to add the smartlock remote ( keyless entry) to a pre smartlock eb II gli not concerned with the immobiliser side of things i just want keyless entry with a genuine ford remote what would i need to do this?

For what its worth, forget the "ford" remote and just install a generic keyless entry unit to the vehicle. much easier and much cheaper.
