A bit hungover this morn I topped up my coolant and jumped in and turned over the car.
Forgot to push in the clutch thinking the car was in neutral. It wasn't. Normaly with cars I do this in they kick over then stall. My eb started driving straight for the house. Turned it off in the nick of time. But why the frig didn't my car stall? Scared the s**t out of me. |

That has happened so many times it's not funny. When I was learning to drive I started my Mum's EJ in reverse and wiped out the front guard of a Morris parked 20 feet behind me. You may have hit the accelerator at the wrong time for it not to stall, state of tune ,clutch adjustment etc etc.The amount of accidents that happen in workshops due to people thinking the car was in neutral and trying to start the car through the window or one foot hanging out the door while pressing the throttle with the left foot and the car takes off into another car.3 apprentices have done all of the above and suffered the consequences.Kevman.

When my clutch pedal broke I had to do that to get my car home... every set of lights I'd have to do it as it didnt want to bang into 1st from neutral while running.

Same story as windex - when my bellhousing broke I had to do the same, start with the starter motor from the lights, get into 3rd, then stop again haha.

yea this happend to me when i first started drivin in my xe 4spd.
as the older manuals that dont have the safety switch of needin ur foot on the clutch to start it. its funny how many people are surprized the car starts in gear. being a manual it doesnt require any oil preesure to hold a gear and if ur battery and starter motor are strong enough ofcourse it will start. also this is why i always put my handbreak on. coz even if u forget the clutch the handbreak should hold the car down.

Had both feet out the door so no accelerator.
But my clutch is set heaps low so that's probably whatdidi it. Had the handbreak on too. Still drove easily. Crazy |

a combination of a strong battery, strong starter motor and obviously a reasonably good engine to fire straight away..
also if your isc is working good, as soon as it fires the ecu will wants to bump the cold engine by opening the isc for higher idlle |

thats right, itll definately start in gear on a cold start as the car is idling a couple hundered rpm higher.
my EL clutch cable 'disapeared' through the fire wall a couple of times, thank god for a strong starter motor!

At least you were in the car.
Not long after my T5 conversion, I reached in through the passenger door to start the car, like I used to do with the Auto all the time, and it started and drove away on me. Unfortunately it was stopped by something solid, and not owned by me. There is a Neutral switch on the T5, that should stop your car from starting in gear. I have it hooked up, and it used to work great. However, now it only works intermittently and will start in gear now. In addition when the car is hot on a really HOT day, it won't let the car start at all. As indicated above, being able to crank the engine in gear is sometimes desireable. I have a pair of wires running up from the Neutral switch to near the washer bottle, that I can plug in a jumper loop to. This allows me to crank the engine while in gear. Cheers BenJ

if the engine is hot and you really need it to start, just bump up the idle speed screw

hahaha, yeah my nuetral switch worked fine, but my mate jumped it across after braking the clutch fork, and my falcon with use the starter motor to start in reverse or first, even on decent size hills as result. One day I'll get around to sorting it, e.g. want a switch setup.
They seem to kick over quite easy, and yeah I've heard the apprentice driving the car off the hoist stories a few times.

Yea I wasn't so lucky to be in the car the first time.
Honda prelude. Putting a cai on. lean in window and turn key. Cars in reverse and wheels in full lock. Parked next to a tree. Later f,l,qtr pannel. Bumper and washer bottle. And pop up light. Well im glad im not the only one. Must be a really strong motor battery starter and a damn clean ics. Cos the handbreak was all the way on and was at around 650rpm. |

Friends 4yo kid got into the car in the garage and turned the keys that were left in the ignition. The car was in gear, jumped forward and started driving, then went through the back of the garage, through the fence and hit a tree.
