Was wondering if someone might know this..................what diff is in my XH
 !It is a 1996 Auto, I had a good look at the inspection plate on the back of the diff and it has a big bulge in the middle of it, that means it is a 9" diff right? I have a 1972 Fairlane and it has the same bulge, but looks like the centre housing is quite a bit bigger than the diff in the XH. Anyone know what sort of diff it is and what the ratio is likely to be? |

wouldnt be a 9" diff and the ratio probly be 3.08:1 or 3.23:1 if a LSD

It would be a borg warner / BTR diff. If it has a plate on the back, it aint a 9"! Both my utes have 3.23:1 diffs in them, one was lsd, the other a single pegger. There should be a metal tag on one of the rear cover bolts, if not, jack it up and turn the wheel one full revolution while counting the amount of turns at the tailshaft.

So how big is the ring gear with this diff? What is the spline count on the axles?
I am probably going to have to get rid of the Fairlane, suppose it wouldn't be a bad idea to pop out the diff and keep it in case I want to strengthen the rear end on the XH ute??? Or is the BW diff reasonably stout? |

Well depeneds what ballpark power where talking a lot haven't had a problem, but some have put 9s in e series.
i believe it's a 78 series borg warner, which, I blieve is 8" or, 8" and 1/4, but can't find anything to confirm my rattling just now, to which one, but it fall down to how far you want to go with the xh. but my question, is what are you doing with the fairlane? what's wrong with it? that your considering put the diff away?

Selling it on EBAY at the moment
!Project that has been put off to the side for too long and really just has to go! Oh okay, with 200mm ring gear that diff is going to be reasonably stout, particuarly as it is a solid rear end. Be interested to see what the spline count is on the Axles though, if it is anything above 28 it would be more than strong enough for what I have in mind, particulary behind an automatic transmission. |

The 9" has a diff pinion support bearing, so it has 3 bearings, not 2 like in an XH diff.
There are more ratio's available too for the 9".
