I was just thinking maybe the turbo guru's could put together a turbo modification guide along the lines of what the 6 Cyclinder Workshop has.
Im sure it would be very useful for those thinking or dreaming of owing a turbo/supercharged falcon and stop 5 new threads a week being made from people wanting to twin turbo their mums ea. Maybe have a turbo guide/supercharger guide with: - Pros/Cons - Whats needed (Basics) i.e turbo, manifold, oil lines.... - Whats needed (More advanced) i.e computer/chip, injectors... - Or even stages with rough costs, componenets and output - Contact details of workshops who work with/sell setups for forced falcons

Yeah this had been talked about before among moderators and admin for a lot of sections, we just havent pulled got around to it yet.

as already said - short discussion about the different setups:
minimal installs - small or 2nd hand turbo, rising rate reg, retarded dizzy complete installs - aftermarket ecu, injectors, fuel pump, FMIC Hardcore/dreamer installs - low comp pistons and other internal mods, fabricated intakes, etc, etc Then you have the whole supercharger vs turbo argument Then the odd thread about the different types of superchargers and "non-capa" setups. Could also summarize air/air, air/water and water/methanol injection for cooling.

perhaps there could be more information on the AU and BA-BF falcons in regards to turboing and supercharging? or just more information in general as i see the $6500 CAPA kit being recommended for all ford supercharging, but i found out that an under-hood blower could do the same thing and thats only $3000/3500 installed from a place in castle hill. and then ive read all this stuff on fordmods bout pod filters and cold air intakes. it kinda confuses me with all these mods that seem to all be supercharging

i really think that everything needed is on this site.
i came with only basic knowledge, but spent hours and hours reading through fordmods and boostedeseries and asking appropriate questions and now have a pretty good understanding of where to go from here. If they want to know badly enough then they have to spend the time getting to know whats really involved. Those who ask stupid 'how do i twin turbo my mums old falcon she gave me' should get banned IMO - if they don't have the patience and drive to do the research surely they aren't ready or responsible enough to turbo their car. Having said that, for things other than turbo (eg. brakes, suspension, cams, exhaust etc) google autospeed and search for falcon (i think type frank falcon for the susopension cam and exhaust stuff) - it provides great beginners information on these things. Once you have an understanding, then ask the questions.

there is plenty of info out there, just use the search button. you will find that most of the turbo guru's are now over at boostedfalcon.net
i knew nothing about turbo's but when i went to look into it i found it quite easy. bare minimum to get boosted, manifold (weather you make a J pipe from the stock manifold or get an aftermartket/ebay one) a turbo, make sure its big enough for the car and not at full spool on idle, factory EA AIT kits came with a T03 turbo but alot go for the T04. and some piping to your throttle body. that will get you boosting and dosing, but will also see a mild V8 leave you in its exhaust dust. my setup is a snort stage 2 log manifold, GT3582, which is a upgraded GT3540 (XR6T turbo) which is capable of 700HP, so thats with the .50 A/R, the GT3582 has a .70A/R so will essentially make more boost under the same RPM. i have been advised that the 4.0 falcons show best results with a .60 rear housing up to a 1.06 (which is what the XR6T has) injectors will need upgrading. depending on what power you want will depend on the unit you need. fuel pump, no point upgrading injectors if your maxing your stock fuel pump. bosch 023 (intank pump) or 044 (external pump) are a popular choice. there is also the walbro GSS 341 (intank) or the GSL 392 i think it is as a 044 replacement. front mount intercoolers are the most popular choice. of course there is 2 types, bar and plate and tube and fin. tube and fin is lighter but makes it harder for the radiator to cool, bar and plate is heavier but allows more air flow through the cooler then the tube and fin. there is also the water to air (W2A) setups which require a small (transmission cooler sized) radiator to be mounted to cool the water. piping, this will depend on your turbo and intercooler, if your turbo only has a 2"-2.25" outlet i dont see the point in going 3" as it will just create lag, my turbo has a 2.5" outlet so im going 2.5" piping until the engine bay cold side, and im only going 3" there for the look. SLOXR8 had 2.5" piping and went up to 3" and he lost boost pressure from the supercharger. im not exactly sure if he worked that out or not but it was interesting to read. exhausts, turbos dont want back pressure, they want free flowing exhaust, so a bigger sized exhaust with straight through mufflers are better. i read in the street fords magazine XR6T magazine that if you have too much back pressure it can actually build up to a point where it will stall the car. sounds strange but im happy to scan and post the article. ECU's is where it gets tricky. most aftermarket ECU's WONT be able to run the ford BTR automatic, so a piggyback setup will have to be done (unless manual) there is a heap of ECU's out there, some work with factory sensors, others require their own sensors which can end up costly. so do your research and talk to a tuner about what they feel comfortable tuning and see some previous work they have done. if your not confident with the tuner dont go there. there is also the option for the J3 chip, plugs into the stock ECU and allows a custom tune to be programed on it, tho it has its limitations. tunes. as stated your power output is only as good as the tune. and basically you pay for what you get. if you go to someone with a good rep, you pay more but you can walk away happy, if you go to some backyard mechanic who has never done a falcon before, chances are you will walk out with a bad tune with not the full power your kit is capable of producing. there is also other things like fuel pressure regulators to keep the fuel pressure up alloy tail shafts lokka, LSD, spool diffs and a few other things im sure i have forgotten. basically what im saying is that there is millions of different ways you could go about it, so there is no one way about doing it. a smart man once told me that you need to sit down and write out what you want out of your car.. do you want just the dose sound? a bit of extra power? or do you want to play with the big boys? once you work out what you want, do a bit of research and look at what other people are making, look at the manifolds, the turbo's and who tuned them. you will find that 2 cars can use similar items but make completely different power. he also told me that you can do it in stages.. for example: i want to make atleast 230kw at the wheels with a front mount intercooler. ok so to make that power i need manifold + GT3540 turbo 3" exhaust 2.5" intercooler piping cheap ebay style intercooler XR6T injectors J3 chip XR6T fuel pump /example so there you see, its pretty simple to make a plan, then set about finding the parts, do you want 2nd hand? look through every forum classifieds, look on boostcruising for 2nd hand turbo's, contact wreckers who specialize in wrecking the new falcons and see about the fuel pumps, injectors and if you want the turbo too and before you know it you will have your kit well under way. then once you have it on the road like that and you want to upgrade, you can then do things a bit at a time, new manifold, bigger turbo, bigger injectors, bigger front mount, things like that. there is nothing saying you have to get the biggest kit straight off. and while your enjoying your boost you could be building a bullet proof motor in your shed for the next upgrade. i hope this has helped some people. as i mentioned this is only what i have picked up along the way, some of it may be wrong and if it is i apologize and feel free to correct me. |

You are SO right, I don't like helping people who can't help themselves, but people who have done what you done, and have searched and educated themselves I am glad to help.

huggie bear- that was a great write up. everything people are asking have been covered already. especially for basic setups. iv been researching and collecting parts for a few months now to turbo my xh xr6. before i started looking at sites like this, fordmods and boostedfalcon.com, i had minimal knowledge on the subject. now im pretty confident in getting this ol girl spoolin.
